She felt nauseous while she showered, uselessly attempting to scrub it away. The tingle on her lips, the warm flutter in her stomach and heart… The more she thought about it, the more she panicked. Wide awake and head reeling.

Did she need to go apologise to August? Did she want to take the kiss back? She was the one who had initiated it. August would have gone to bed and acted the same toward her the next day. Shay would have lost nothing.

She didn’t need to kiss her.

Shay had wanted to. Had wanted to for a while.

Switching off the bedroom lights and climbing into bed, she blindly grabbed Duckie and pulled him to her chest.

Shay twisted and turned between the too-warm sheets, attempting to find a comfortable position, but all she could think about was kissing August and kissing Rachel until her stomach ached and she tightly squeezed the pad on Duckie’s orange foot.

“Hello, baby,” Rachel’s voice filled the room and Shay choked on a sob, warm tears spilling from her eyes. “I’m writing a song just for you and it’s driving your mom crazy…” Her voice was filled with laughter and Shay remembered being curled up against her side, head resting on Rachel’s chest, exhausted from dealing with a six-car pileup that had come in that morning.

“Oh, you like that?” Rachel asked, when Jake kicked against Shay’s hand caressing her stomach.

“Probably dreading how many times he’s going to have to listen to you stop and start over.”

“Tough crowd,” Rachel murmured, soothingly rubbing Shay’s back, making her grow sleepy. “No appreciation for the creative process.”

“Sing for us then, Professor Aja.”

“The lyrics aren’t ready yet.”

“Hum it to us.”

A pair of soft lips pressed against her forehead and a familiar dulcet tone smoothly rose from Rachel’s throat, her chest pleasantly vibrating against Shay’s cheek.

Shay’s wet eyes fluttered closed and she pressed her face against the pink ribbon around Duckie’s neck, Rachel’s soothing melody lulling her to sleep.
